Behind the Scenes: Sustainable Conservation Trust Internship
During these past few months, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Sustainable Conservation Trust, an organisation focused on sustainability, conservation, and community-led design initiatives. Over the course of approximately 20 hours, I worked alongside architects and designers on a range of studio and project-based activities, gaining insight into professional architectural practice within a collaborative and environmentally conscious setting.
The internship began with an initial meeting and studio tour, where the team introduced me to the organisation, the projects they were currently involved in, and the overall goals of the practice. This gave me valuable insight into how conservation and sustainability can be integrated into architectural work while also allowing me to understand the professional workflow of the studio environment.

What I Did
Throughout the internship, I assisted with a variety of studio and project-based tasks. This included:
- Attending an introductory meeting and studio tour with the team
- Assisting with organising and improving the studio workspace over several hours

- Participating in an online meeting discussing the redevelopment of a local skatepark project

- Visiting the skatepark site to better understand the space and ongoing design considerations

- Supporting the development of elevation drawings for the skatepark proposal
- Observing collaborative discussions between architects and young designers within the studio environment
Working on both studio organisation and live project discussions gave me a broader understanding of how architectural practices operate on a day-to-day basis. It was particularly valuable being able to contribute towards a real community-focused project while learning from experienced professionals such as Deniz Beck and other members of the design team.
Keeping Track
To document the experience, I kept a personal record of the hours completed throughout the internship, project communication, and process material from the work undertaken during the placement. I have also included a recommendation letter provided by Sustainable Conservation Trust confirming my involvement and contribution to the organisation.
