Reflection: Social Media Internship with the Architecture Department
Looking back on this experience, I realise that the internship gave me much more than just experience in social media content creation. It allowed me to work within a professional environment and better understand how collaboration, communication, and organisation operate within a real department setting.
One of the most valuable parts of the experience was having the opportunity to work alongside Nicola Crowson, Head Associate Professor, and Jamie Howard from the University of Portsmouth Architecture marketing team. Being trusted to contribute ideas and content within a professional environment made the experience feel both rewarding and motivating. Their guidance and feedback throughout the internship helped me better understand the level of thought and planning that goes into representing a creative department professionally.
As an architecture student, I found it really interesting to explore a side of the field that exists beyond studio work and project submissions. The internship showed me how architecture can also be communicated through digital platforms, storytelling, and audience engagement. It made me more aware of how important presentation and communication are within the creative industry as a whole.
I also feel that this experience helped me grow personally in confidence and professionalism. Working to a brief, communicating ideas clearly, and responding to feedback in a professional way were all valuable skills that I will carry forward into future opportunities within architecture and design.
Although the internship was relatively short, it gave me insight into a different aspect of the industry and allowed me to develop skills that I may not have explored otherwise. Overall, it was a genuinely enjoyable and rewarding experience that has encouraged me to continue developing both my creative and professional abilities moving forward.
